The Pattern Behind the Table
Nine of the twelve entries above are dead, degraded, or rebranded. That is not a coincidence, and it is not a series of individually badly-run companies. Two forces have been running in parallel for nearly a decade.
Legal enforcement
Instagram has repeatedly issued cease-and-desist letters to automation services once they reached meaningful scale. MassPlanner is the clearest documented case, but the 2017 cluster — Instagress, MassPlanner, Archie, and several smaller tools within weeks of each other — indicates coordinated action rather than coincidence.
Technical detection
From roughly 2019 onward, Instagram deployed device fingerprinting, behavioural pattern analysis, and IP reputation scoring. Reporting on the 2023–2024 period describes further detection upgrades, and enforcement reportedly tightened again in early 2026. Automation that performs actions from your account produces exactly the signals these systems look for: consistent timing, unnatural volume, and activity originating from servers rather than phones.
The second force is the more consequential one. Legal action removed individual companies. Detection undermined the entire technical approach.
What This Means If You’re Choosing a Tool
- Check the date on any review you read. A glowing 2021 review of a tool tells you nothing about 2026. Several tools in the table above still have enthusiastic reviews ranking well in search.
- Be sceptical of “the new Jarvee.” Any tool promising automated follows, likes, and comments from your account faces the same detection that ended its predecessors.
- Watch for tools still selling after they stop working. A live checkout page is not evidence that the product functions.
- Never share your Instagram password. Every automation tool requires account access — that is inherent to how they work, and it is the single largest risk factor in this category.
What Still Works
Three approaches remain viable, with genuinely different trade-offs:
- Platform-compliant schedulers and analytics tools. Fully legitimate, no platform risk. They help you execute a strategy but do not generate growth on their own.
- Manual growth. Slow, entirely within Instagram’s terms, and the only genuinely risk-free option. For many accounts it is still the right answer.
- Follower delivery services. Structurally different from automation — followers are delivered to a public profile and nothing logs into your account. This avoids the specific detection surface that ended the tools above. It remains against Instagram’s Terms of Service, and it builds social proof rather than community.
